The story of Winslow
Anglo-Saxon England buried its important dead under mounds and named the surrounding land for them, so the burial outlasted the person by a thousand years in the name alone. Winslow became a village and then a surname carried by families from it, and it reached New England in the seventeenth century with the earliest English settlement. It became an American given name in the nineteenth century, in the same habit that put Everett, Chester and Emerson at the front of the name, and it has been coming back with the rest of them.
Meaning
Wine's burial mound
Old English Wines hlaw: the personal name Wine, meaning 'friend', with hlaw, a hill or a burial mound. Winslow in Buckinghamshire is recorded in that form. The -low ending appears across England — Ludlow, Marlow, Taplow — and in many cases it does mark a barrow, some of which have been excavated. The reading is documented.

The trade-off
- A documented English place-name with an unusually vivid history underneath it.
- Win and Winnie are both ready short forms with records of their own.
- Two syllables and phonetic spelling, with nothing silent to explain.
- The second syllable is the word slow, and children will find that quickly.
- It is strongly a surname in most people's ears and will be read as one on forms.
- It carries a distinct New England and early-American flavor, which is either the appeal or the drawback.
