The story of Winslow
The name starts as a place: Winslow in Buckinghamshire, recorded in early English charters as the hill or mound belonging to a man called Wine. From the place came the family name, and English families named Winslow carried it across the Atlantic in the seventeenth century, where it took root in New England and stayed. From there it followed the ordinary American path for old surnames — from the back of the name to the front — which is how a nineteenth-century Massachusetts painter came to be christened Winslow Homer after his mother's family. It also stuck to the map again in the American West, most famously the railroad town of Winslow, Arizona.
