Cristian

Cristian drops the h that Latin put in to mark a Greek letter. The Greek writes the sound at the front of this name with a single character, chi; Latin needed two letters to show that it was Greek; and Spanish and Italian have quietly dropped the second one again, which is where this spelling comes from.

The story of Cristian
The earliest Christian symbol was a fish, and the reason is an acronym. The Greek word for fish, ichthys, spelled out the initials of a five-word phrase naming Jesus as Christ, son of God and savior, which made it a compact way of indicating an allegiance without writing anything down that a hostile reader would understand. Fish appear scratched on walls, on lamps and on tombs from the second century. The cross came later and was slower to be adopted, partly because crucifixion was still a live form of execution and putting one on a wall was not obviously a good idea.
Meaning
A Christian
Latin christianus, a follower of Christ, with the title itself being Greek for anointed and a translation of a Hebrew word. The name is a declaration of allegiance rather than a description. This spelling is the standard Spanish and Romanian one and not an American simplification.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Jermaine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cristian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jermaine climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jermaine's path sketches the road Cristian is walking now.

The trade-off
- It is the standard spelling in Spanish, Romanian and Portuguese use.
- Cris is a short, plain, unisex everyday form available from the start.
- The h is genuinely unnecessary, so the spelling is simpler without losing anything.
- The record carries it for girls in small numbers, so it is not quite an absolute signal.
- English and Spanish give it different stress and different syllable counts.
- Christian with the h is far commoner in English and will be written instead.
