Kaizen
Masculine · Japanese roots · “Improvement”
Kaizen is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 3,039 boys against 31 girls since 1880.
Kaizen is an ordinary Japanese word — improvement, change for the better — that reached English through factory floors and management books long before anyone thought of giving it to a child. Two clean syllables, a hard opening K, and inside it the short form Kai, already familiar to English speakers. It is one of the newest names on the American list, and one of the few whose meaning a parent can state in a single word.

The story of Kaizen
改善 is standard modern Japanese vocabulary, not a traditional given name. Its fame comes from postwar Japanese manufacturing, where kaizen described improvement made in small continuous steps rather than great leaps — an idea closely tied to Toyota's production system. Western business adopted the word in the 1980s, helped by Masaaki Imai's 1986 book on the subject, and from there it spread into English as a borrowed noun. Its use as a first name is an American development of the last couple of decades, and a genuinely recent one: nearly everyone carrying it is a young child.
Meaning

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Jarred test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kaizen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jarred climbed just as high around 1988, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jarred's path sketches the road Kaizen is walking now.
Kaizen is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

Where Kaizen is headed
Kaizen is on a steep climb — if the curve holds, 2030 could see around 120% more babies given the name than today. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Comes with Kai already attached — a short form that needs no explanation and works on its own.
- The spelling follows English sound rules closely, so it is usually read correctly on the first try.
- One-word meaning that is documented and easy to state, which is rare among new names.
- Adults who have worked in manufacturing, engineering or management already know the word.
- It is vocabulary, not a Japanese given name. Japanese speakers are likely to hear a familiar noun — and often a workplace term — rather than a name, which is worth knowing if the language is part of your family.
- The name is climbing steadily. A child born now will probably be the only Kaizen in the school, but that may be less true of the year groups behind them.
- Kai, the natural nickname, is far more common than the full name, so the short form may well be shared with a classmate or two.
