André carries an accent in French, and American records do not. The mark is not decoration there: it tells a French reader that the first vowel is closed and that the stress is at the back. Strip it and the name loses its instructions, which is why the same four letters are said two quite different ways on the two sides of the Atlantic.

Where it comes from

The story of Andre

The Orthodox churches give him a title the western church does not use: the First-Called. The gospel account has him following first and then going to fetch his brother, which makes the more famous of the two a second arrival, and the eastern tradition has never let that detail go. It matters more than it sounds. The see of Constantinople claims him as its founder in the way Rome claims his brother, so the title carries a quiet argument about precedence between the two halves of Christendom that has been running for a very long time. A single adverb in one gospel verse, doing a thousand years of diplomatic work.

Meaning

of a man; manly

Greek, built on the word for a man in the sense of an adult male rather than a person. The name belonged to a fisherman from Galilee whose Greek name in a Jewish family is itself worth noticing.

Andre is past its biggest year. The count topped out at 2,510 boys in 1970 and has eased 65% since — the slow half of a naming cycle, where a name stays familiar while getting steadily less common. The move since 2023: down 18.7%.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It travels: close forms exist across Europe and are recognized everywhere.
  • Dre is a short form that sounds entirely current and needs no explaining.
  • The name has been in continuous American use for the whole length of the record.
What to consider
  • The stress is genuinely unsettled between the French and American readings.
  • The accent that would fix it is stripped by most American forms and systems.
  • The record holds girls as well, and the girl is much the smaller side.
