Jet is an English word doing double duty: the deep-black gemstone that gave us "jet black", polished into mourning jewelry in Victorian England, and the rushing stream of air that gave the twentieth century its airplanes. One syllable, three letters, no soft edges — it lands the moment you say it. It has been quietly on the American books since the era those airplanes were new.

Where it comes from

The story of Jet

The gemstone road is the older one: fossilized wood, black and light enough to carve, known to the Greeks as gagates after the Lycian town near where it was quarried, and worked into beads and rosaries in England for centuries before Victorian mourning fashion made Whitby jet famous. The word arrived in English through Old French jaiet, and by the nineteenth century "jet black" was ordinary English. The second road is much younger — jeter, to throw, giving a jet of water and then, in the mid-twentieth century, jet engines and jet travel. Jet as a given name in the United States belongs to the age of the second meaning, though the letters carry the first.

Meaningscholars disagree

Either the black gemstone or the fast-moving stream — English has two separate words spelled the same

The gemstone "jet" comes through Old French jaiet from Greek gagates, named for the town of Gagas in ancient Lycia; the aviation and fountain sense comes from French jeter, "to throw", from Latin iactare. Both words are genuine English, and a name spelled Jet inherits both. Separately, in Dutch, Jet is a short form of Henriëtte and is a woman's name there.

#165
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jet went to 160 boys in 2025, but Jett is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 2,327, which makes it the 165th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,079 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 734 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 10,675 for Jet itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three letters, one syllable, and an ordinary English word — it is heard correctly and spelled correctly the first time.
  • Works across languages without adjustment: the same sound and spelling function in Dutch, German and English.
  • Rare enough in the United States that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom, while being fully familiar as a word.
  • Two documented histories behind it — a Greek-derived gemstone and a French-derived verb — which is more depth than most short word names carry.
What to consider
  • The double-t spelling Jett is the more common form in American records, so expect "one t or two?" for life. Pick one and be ready to repeat it.
  • It is a word first, which means the word's other company comes along: jet lag, the jet set, jet-black hair. Most of that is harmless, but it is there.
  • In the Netherlands, Jet is a woman's name — a short form of Henriëtte. Anyone with Dutch connections may read it that way on paper before meeting the child.
  • Very short names give little to grow into and nothing to shorten. Some parents pair Jet with a longer middle name to leave a formal option available.
