The story of Ellenor
Eleanor of Aquitaine married the king of France, had the marriage annulled, married the future king of England eight weeks later, and was mother to two more kings. She ruled Aquitaine in her own right, went on crusade, was imprisoned by her husband for sixteen years and outlived nearly everyone. Her name entered English with her. Ellenor is one of the spellings used in English parish registers for centuries.

Not established
Eleanor descends from Provençal Alienor, whose derivation is genuinely unknown; the popular gloss from Greek for light is a later guess with no support. The name has been in England since the twelfth century.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
