The story of Elenor
Medieval documents spell this name Alianore, Elianore, Elenor, Elynour and a dozen other ways, because spelling was not fixed and clerks wrote what they heard. Jane Austen used Elinor for a heroine in 1811, which fixed that form in English literature. Elenor is another of the old spellings and appears in nineteenth-century American records in real numbers, alongside Eleanor and Elnora.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The origin is genuinely unknown. The earliest form is the Provençal Alienor; the popular derivation from a phrase meaning the other Aenor is doubted, and the connection to Helen is unsupported. The chain from Alienor to Eleanor is not in question.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
