Where it comes from

The story of Bostyn

Botwulf founded a monastery in the fens around 654, and the settlement that grew around it was Botolphston, then Boston. Emigrants from that town named a Massachusetts settlement after it in 1630. Its use as an American given name is recent and mostly for boys; Bostyn with the y is used for girls, and the two are said identically.

Meaning

Botolph's stone

From the personal name Botwulf, an Anglo-Saxon saint, and stan, a stone — probably a boundary marker or a preaching cross. Botolph's own name joins Germanic elements meaning messenger and wolf.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
