The word equivocation became famous because of a Jesuit called Henry Garnet. Tried in 1606 for knowing about the Gunpowder Plot, he defended saying one thing while meaning another under oath, and Shakespeare's Macbeth has a porter mocking an equivocator who committed treason enough for God's sake.

The story of Garnett
The trial is one of the strangest in English legal history because the argument was about language. Garnet had heard of the plot in confession and could not report it without breaking the seal; his defense involved mental reservation, the doctrine that a person may say something misleading if a silent qualification makes it true. The court and the pamphleteers went for it hard, equivocation became a term of abuse, and Macbeth — written within months — has a porter imagining an equivocator arriving in hell. Garnet was executed. The surname's own origins are much duller and genuinely uncertain, split between a jewel and a piece of ironmongery.

the gemstone, or a maker of hinges
The surname has two proposed sources: the gem, from Old French grenat and Latin granatum, seeded, after the pomegranate; and an occupational name from garnet, a kind of hinge. A derivation from the personal name Guarinot has also been offered. None is settled.

Fashion outlook
Garnett sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two syllables that everyone can already say and nearly spell.
- It serves either child, and the records show both.
- Both possible etymologies are documented, whichever is right.
- It is a gemstone and a birthstone, and the association is fixed.
- Garnet with one t is equally used, so the spelling will be given.
- It is strongly represented among the oldest generations and reads clearly as of that time.
