Where it comes from
From -ina to Gina
The story of Gina
Italian forms diminutives with -ina as a matter of course, and when a dozen common names share the ending it becomes usable on its own — the same process that gave English Bert from Albert and Herbert. Gina was in ordinary Italian use as a familiar form and became an independent name; Italian emigration and mid-century Italian cinema carried it into American use, where it peaked in the mid-1960s.

Not established
Gina inherits whichever parent a family had in mind. Through Regina it is the Latin regina, 'queen'; through Luigina, the Germanic hlud and wig, 'famous warrior'; through Georgina, the Greek georgos, 'earth-worker'. The -ina ending itself is a diminutive suffix and carries no sense of its own.

About 1 girl in 15,914 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 17,859 for Gina itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Willie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Willie climbed just as high around 1909, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Willie's path sketches the road Gina is walking now.
Gina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
