Where it comes from

The story of Ginna

Regina is one of a small set of Latin words that survive in English constitutional practice unchanged. The monarch's signature is the initial followed by R, for Regina or Rex, and legal cases prosecuted by the crown are styled R v the defendant. Coins carry the abbreviated titles in Latin. The word itself is straightforwardly the feminine of rex, and rex descends from a very old Indo-European root about ruling and about straightness, which also gives Sanskrit rajan, Gaulish rix, Irish ri and, through a different path, English right and reign. Regina became a Christian name through a martyr and through the Marian title Regina Caeli, queen of heaven, and it is one of the very few Latin common nouns given as a name without alteration.

Latin regina, a queen

Ginna is a short form of Regina, from Latin regina, a queen, the feminine of rex, from a root about ruling that also gives Sanskrit rajan and Irish ri. It may alternatively be a clip of Virginia, Georgina or Luigina. Italian and Spanish clip names from the back, which is what produces Gina from any of them. It peaks in the American data in 1963.

About 1 girl in 15,914 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Ginna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Latin word behind it is settled and dignified.
  • Regina is available as a full formal version.
  • It is short and easy to say.
What to consider
  • Gina with one n is far more common.
  • The doubled n invites a hard g reading.
  • Which longer name it stands for is not recoverable.
