The story of Lauretta
Petrarch's Laura, the subject of three hundred and sixty-six poems, made the name a European literary property in the fourteenth century, and Italy produced Lauretta and Loretta from it — Boccaccio has a Lauretta among his storytellers. Italian emigration brought it to America, where it peaked around 1918.
Meaning
laurel
From the Latin laurus, 'laurel' or 'bay tree', through Laura with the Italian diminutive -etta. The laurel wreath crowned victorious generals and, later, poets; the English laureate descends directly from the word. The meaning is transparent and undisputed.

The trade-off

- Petrarch and Boccaccio both use the name, which is real literary weight.
- Laura and Etta are two short forms, both with their own currency.
- Loretta is much the commoner American form.
- Three syllables and a diminutive ending make it longer than Laura.
- It is strongly period-coded to the early twentieth century.
