The story of Lida
Lydia entered Christian naming through the Acts of the Apostles and became common across Europe. Russian and other Slavic languages took it as Lidia and shortened it to Lida in ordinary familiar use, and German did much the same. Nineteenth-century American records carry Lida in real numbers, both from central European emigration and as a home-grown clipping of Lydia and Alida, peaking around 1885.
Meaning
woman of Lydia
Through Lydia, from the Greek name of a kingdom in western Asia Minor. Lydia is credited with inventing coined money, and its last king, Croesus, gave English the phrase 'rich as Croesus'. A woman called Lydia in Acts is described as a seller of purple cloth, and the name means simply that she came from there.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
