Benita
Feminine · “Latin benedictus”
Benedictus means well-spoken-of, from bene and dicere, and its opposite maledictus, badly spoken, gives English malediction and French maudit. A blessing and a curse are both speech acts in Latin, and the pair treats them as symmetrical: what matters is what is said about you.

The story of Benita
Latin treats blessing and cursing as parallel speech acts and English has kept both words. Benediction is a good saying, malediction a bad one, and the same pair produces benefactor and malefactor, benevolent and malevolent, benign and malign. French kept maudit, cursed, as a live word and lost the positive counterpart. The underlying idea, that a spoken word can do something rather than merely describe it, is old and cross-cultural, and it is why blessings and curses appear in legal formulas, treaties and grave inscriptions across the ancient world. Benedict's rule, written for his own monastery, spread across Europe and became the basis of Western monastic life for a thousand years, largely because it is moderate, practical and short. Its opening word is Listen.

Benita's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Esperanza climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Esperanza's path sketches the road Benita is walking now.
