Trixie
Feminine · “Latin viatrix”
Beatrix was Viatrix first. The early Christian name means a female traveler, from via, a road, and it was altered to Beatrix by association with beatus, blessed. A spelling mistake made for pious reasons changed the meaning of the name permanently, and Trixie is what remains of it.

The story of Trixie
Reinterpretation of this kind is common in Christian naming and it usually goes in the direction of piety. Viatrix, a traveler, made sense to early Christians as a name for a soul on a journey, but beatus, blessed, made more sense still, and the two words are close enough in Latin that the substitution required only a letter. Once made, it stuck, and every medieval and modern reference gives the name as blessed. The same instinct changed Katherine's spelling to fit katharos, pure, and gave Christal its Ch. What is unusual about Beatrix is how completely the older form disappeared: Viatrix survives only in a handful of early martyr records, and nobody using the name Beatrice today has any reason to know it once meant a woman on the road.

Latin viatrix, a woman traveler
Beatrix is generally derived from Late Latin Viatrix, a female traveler, from via, a way or road, altered under the influence of beatus, blessed. The blessed reading is therefore a folk etymology that changed the spelling and then became the accepted meaning. Trixie is the English diminutive of Beatrix. It peaks in the American data in 1901.
