Velia
Feminine
Velia was Elea, and Elea is where Zeno wrote his paradoxes. Achilles cannot catch the tortoise, the arrow in flight is motionless, a moving body must first cross half the distance and so can never start. Two and a half thousand years later mathematicians are still explaining why the arguments fail.

The story of Velia
Elea was founded around 540 BC by Greeks fleeing the Persian conquest of Phocaea, and it produced one of the most consequential philosophical schools in history. Parmenides argued that change and plurality are illusions and that what is, is, in a poem that survives in fragments. Zeno, his pupil, defended the position with a series of paradoxes designed to show that the alternative, a world of motion and division, leads to absurdity. Achilles gives the tortoise a head start and must first reach where it was, by which time it has moved, and so on infinitely. The flying arrow occupies at each instant a space equal to itself and is therefore at rest. The arguments are not simply wrong; they turn on assumptions about infinity that took until the nineteenth century to formalize, and they are still taught because working out what is wrong with them is genuinely instructive.

The Evia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Velia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Evia climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Evia's path sketches the road Velia is walking now.
Velia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
