Where it comes from

The story of Blayke

The collapse of blæc and blac left a family of English surnames meaning either very dark or very fair, with no way to tell which. William Blake wrote and engraved his own books. Blake became an American given name for both sexes, and the Blayke respelling appears in the registers for girls in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

dark; or pale

From the Old English blæc, 'black', or blac, 'pale' — two distinct words whose spellings collapsed in Middle English, leaving the surname genuinely ambiguous. Both are ordinary Old English. The -ayke respelling is modern with no meaning of its own.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That the name means either black or pale and nobody can say which is a first-rate fact.
  • One syllable, clean, and never mispronounced.
  • William Blake is a first-rate bearer of the standard spelling.
What to consider
  • Blake is overwhelmingly the standard spelling.
  • The respelling will be corrected by other people constantly.
  • It reads as more masculine than feminine.
