The story of Blayke
Blake was trained as an engraver and made his living at it, and around 1788 he began producing his own books by relief etching, writing and drawing directly onto copper with an acid-resistant varnish and then biting away the background. The method let him print text and illustration together and color each copy by hand, so no two are alike; Songs of Innocence and of Experience exists in copies that differ in color, order and detail. He attributed the technique to his brother Robert, who had died in 1787 and whom he said he continued to see and consult. The books sold almost nothing in his lifetime. The result is that one of the major English poets is also a printmaker whose work cannot be reproduced properly in ordinary type, which is why he was neglected for a century.

Old English blaec or blac, black or pale
Blayke is a respelling of Blake, from Old English blaec, black, or blac, pale or shining. The two words differed only in vowel length and merged, so the name genuinely carries two opposite meanings and no way to choose. The -ayke spelling adds two letters and no sound. The peak of this spelling is 2009.
