Where it comes from

The story of Vern

Vernon is a place in Normandy, and the family that came from it carried the name to England after the Conquest, where the Vernons became a substantial gentry line. The surname crossed into given-name use in the nineteenth century and rose sharply in America through the 1900s. Vern, the clipping, was registered as a legal name alongside it and peaked around 1920.

Meaningscholars disagree

alder grove

Through Vernon, from the Gaulish vernos, 'alder', plus a suffix marking a place — so a stand of alders. A competing reading takes Vern from the Latin vernus, 'of spring', which is the source usually given for the feminine Verna. Both were in American use.

Vern sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 274 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Vernon stands behind it with a documented Norman place and family.
  • The alder-grove meaning is concrete and easy to picture.
  • One syllable, firm, and never mispronounced.
What to consider
  • The origin is split between a Gaulish tree word and a Latin season word.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the early twentieth century.
