Abrahm
Masculine · “Hebrew av”
God renames Abram as Abraham in Genesis 17 and explains it as father of a multitude. The explanation does not work: the syllable added does not mean multitude in Hebrew, and the text is offering a pun rather than an etymology, as it usually does.

The story of Abrahm
The chapter presents the renaming as part of the covenant: no longer Abram but Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. Hebrew av-ram means exalted father, and the added syllable is glossed by connection with hamon, a multitude, but hamon is not present in the name and the resemblance is partial. Scholars generally treat Abram and Abraham as dialectal variants of a single old name, with the narrative supplying a theological reason for the difference. The same chapter renames Sarai as Sarah, with no explanation offered at all, since both mean princess. This is how the Hebrew Bible works with names throughout: it uses them to make a point about the story rather than to record a derivation, and it does so freely enough that the puns rarely survive linguistic examination.

Hebrew av, father
Abrahm is a respelling of Abraham, Hebrew Avraham, whose first element is av, father. Genesis 17:5 explains the change from Avram by connecting it to av hamon goyim, father of a multitude of nations, but the ham element does not carry that meaning in Hebrew and the derivation is generally regarded as wordplay. Both forms may simply be variants of one name. The peak of this spelling is 2013.

The Reymond test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Abrahm's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Reymond climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Reymond's path sketches the road Abrahm is walking now.
Abrahm sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
