The story of Adrean
Hadrian succeeded Trajan in 117 at the greatest territorial extent Rome ever reached, and immediately gave up the eastern conquests as indefensible. He spent more than half his reign traveling the provinces rather than in Rome, inspecting armies, founding cities and building, and he defined frontiers physically: the wall across Britain from the Tyne to the Solway, eighty Roman miles with milecastles and forts, and a timber palisade in Germany. The policy was consolidation, and it was controversial among a senatorial class that measured emperors by conquest. He also rebuilt the Pantheon, designed his villa at Tivoli, and provoked the catastrophic Bar Kokhba revolt in Judaea. The wall is the most visible Roman structure in Britain and the largest surviving Roman monument anywhere, and it exists because an emperor decided the empire had reached its limit.
