Where it comes from

The story of Hartwell

Medieval English hunting had a technical vocabulary as precise as any trade's, and the terms for deer distinguished species, sex and age. A hart was a male red deer in his sixth year or later, a hind the female; a buck and a doe were fallow deer; a stag could be either in some usages. A young male red deer was a brocket in his second year, a spayad in his third, a staggard in his fourth. The books of venery, from the fourteenth century onward, set all this out along with the correct terms for the animals' droppings, tracks and the way a carcass was broken up. Almost none of it survived the end of the hunting culture that needed it, and what is left sits in place names like Hartwell and Hartford, the stag ford, and on coats of arms.
