The story of Sid
Rodrigo Diaz was a Castilian noble of the eleventh century who served King Sancho, was exiled by Alfonso VI, took service with the Muslim ruler of Zaragoza, and eventually took Valencia and ruled it in his own right until his death in 1099. The title he is remembered by comes from Andalusi Arabic al-sid, a form of al-sayyid, the lord, and it was applied to him by Muslims; the epithet Campeador, champion, is the Christian one. The Poem of the Cid, written around 1200, is the earliest substantial poem in Spanish and presents him as a model of loyalty. What the two names record between them is a career conducted across a religious frontier that both later traditions preferred to simplify, and the fact that the Arabic one stuck is the more remarkable half of it.

Sid is a short form of Sidney or Sydney, an English surname either from the Norman place Saint-Denis or from Old English elements meaning a wide island or water-meadow. It also serves for Siddhartha and, historically, for names beginning Sid-. The Spanish title El Cid is unrelated, from Arabic al-sayyid, the lord. The American peak is 1884.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
