Where it comes from

The story of Alize

The trade winds blow steadily from the north-east in the northern tropics and the south-east below the equator, and they made sailing routes possible in a way nothing else did — the whole shape of Atlantic navigation follows them. French named them les alizés. The word became a girls' name in French use and reaches American records both that way and, more often, as a respelling of names that sound similar. A liqueur brand of the name has also carried it since the nineteen-nineties.

Meaningscholars disagree

the trade wind

French alizé names the trade winds, and its own derivation is uncertain; it may come from an older French word about smoothness or regularity, which would suit a wind that blows steadily in one direction. That the word means the trade wind is documented. In American use Alize also functions as a respelling of Alyssa, Alicia and Elise, none of which is related, and the record does not say which road a given Alize took.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alize went to 55 girls in 2025, but Alice, Alyse and Alyce and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 3,766, which makes it the 71st most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,927 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 427 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 29,223 for Alize itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A concrete and genuinely beautiful meaning — a named wind rather than an abstraction.
  • Ali is a ready short form with a very long record of its own.
  • Five letters, and easy for English speakers once the ending is settled.
What to consider
  • The French and American pronunciations differ by a whole syllable.
  • A well-known liqueur carries the name, which comes up in adult settings.
  • Alize, Alizé, Alizée and Alizay all circulate and none is standard in American use.
