Our story of Alise
Ours, offered as ours. Adalheidis to Adelis to Aalis to Alice is one of the best-documented erosions in European naming — four syllables down to two over four centuries, with every intermediate form written down somewhere. Alice looks like a simple name and is in fact the ruin of a compound one. Alice Liddell, who heard the story on a boat in 1862, carried the worn-down version without anyone noticing what it had been.
Meaning
noble kind
From Germanic Adalheidis, joining adal, noble, to heid, kind or sort; Old French compressed it to Adelis and then Aalis, which English took as Alice. The compression is well documented at every stage.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alise went to 29 girls in 2025, but Alice, Alize and Alyse and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 3,766, which makes it the 71st most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,590 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 427 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 55,423 for Alise itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
