The story of Alizee
The alizés are the steady easterly winds of the tropics that carried European ships to the Americas for four hundred years, and their name has been in French since the age of sail. Its use as a given name is recent: it appears in France in the 1980s and became widely known through the singer Alizée, born Alizée Jacotey in Ajaccio, whose first record sold across Europe from 1999. American records show the name from the 2000s, in French-descended families, in Haitian and Louisiana communities, and among families who simply liked the sound, and it peaks as recently as 2019 — one of the newer names in the ranked American data.
Meaning
Trade wind
From French alizé, a trade wind, recorded from the seventeenth century; the word's own origin is uncertain, with a derivation from an old French adjective meaning smooth or regular most often proposed. The use of the feminine adjectival form alizée as a personal name is modern and French, and the accent is regularly dropped in American records.

Pronouncing Alizee
ah-lee-ZAY
Three syllables, stress on the last. The accented final é is what carries the stress, and American records drop it, which leaves English readers with no signal and produces uh-LEE-zee about as often as the correct saying.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alizee went to 24 girls in 2025, but Alice, Alize and Alyse and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 3,766, which makes it the 71st most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,167 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 427 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 66,969 for Alizee itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Alizee sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
