Where it comes from

The story of Alyse

Adelheid was a tenth-century Holy Roman empress and a saint, which put the name across Germanic Europe; French shortened it drastically, as French does, and Norman settlers carried Alice to England, where it was among the commonest women's names of the Middle Ages. It faded and returned, and the nineteenth-century books about a girl who falls down a rabbit hole kept it visible ever since. Alyse belongs to the recent wave of respellings and reaches the American record in the later twentieth century.

Meaning

noble kind

Germanic Adalheidis joins adal, 'noble', to heid, 'kind, sort, quality' — so the compound is closer to 'of noble sort' than to any single adjective. French wore it down to Aalis and then Alis, and English took Alice. The reading is documented and undisputed; Alyse is a modern respelling with a y and a final e.

Two syllables with the stress on the second and a soft s at the end — not the ALL-iss of the English Alice. The respelling changes the sound as well as the letters, which most respellings do not.

Alyse sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 364 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alyse went to 54 girls in 2025, but Alice, Alize and Alyce and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 3,766, which makes it the 71st most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,957 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 427 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 29,764 for Alyse itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Germanic origin with a very long medieval record behind it.
  • Aly is a ready short form shared with several well-established names.
  • Two syllables and no genuinely difficult sounds.
What to consider
  • Alice is the standard spelling and is said quite differently, so this is not simply a respelling.
  • Alyse, Elise, Alise and Alyce all circulate and are said two or three ways between them.
  • The stress falls on the second syllable here and the first in Alice, which causes real confusion.
