Adria
Feminine · “of Hadria”
Adria is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 6,506 girls against 7 boys since 1880.
Adria is a town in northern Italy that gave its name to a sea. The Adriatic is named for it, and so is the emperor Hadrian, whose family came from there — which means the wall across northern England is very distantly named after this place too.

Where it comes from
From Hadria to Adria
The story of Adria
Hadrian was a second-century Roman emperor whose family came from Hispania but traced itself to Hadria, and the name Hadrianus became a Christian one through a series of saints and six popes. English took Adrian, Italian Adriano, and the feminine forms followed — Adriana in Italian and Spanish, Adrienne in French, Adria as the shortest of them. Adria reaches United States records in the twentieth century, and it is also an Italian and Catalan name in its own right.
Meaning
of Hadria
Hadria, now Adria, was a town in the Po delta; the Adriatic Sea takes its name from it, and so does the Roman family name Hadrianus, 'of Hadria'. The town's own name is probably Etruscan or Venetic and is not recoverable. So the reading of the name is documented and the meaning of the place it points to is not.

The Ardelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adria's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ardelle climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ardelle's path sketches the road Adria is walking now.
Adria sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Addie and Ria are both ready short forms and both are established names.
- A documented Roman origin with an unusually traceable chain behind it.
- Three syllables with a light ending, which pairs well with most surnames.
- Adriana is far more common and this shorter form will be lengthened by strangers.
- Adria, Adrea and Adrian all circulate and the last is usually a boys' name.
- It sits close to Aria and Adria and gets misheard as both.
