Where it comes from

The story of Daila

Latvian is one of the two surviving Baltic languages and is unusually conservative — it preserves features that other Indo-European languages lost long ago, which is why linguists pay it a great deal of attention. Its own stock of names includes a set built on plain adjectives: Daila, Skaidrite, Mirdza. Latvian emigration to the United States after the second world war brought some of them here. Separately and far more commonly, Daila appears as a modern American respelling of Dalia and Dayla.

Meaningscholars disagree

beautiful, graceful — in Latvian

Latvian daiļa means beautiful or fair, with a sense closer to well-formed than to striking, and Daila is a documented Latvian woman's name from it. That reading is solid. In American use Daila also functions as a respelling of Dalia, which is Hebrew for a hanging branch, and of Dayla. Which road a given Daila is on is a family fact, and the Latvian one is much the rarer here.

Daila sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2022, with 91 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Daila went to 54 girls in 2025, but Dayla and Daylah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 120, which makes it the 840th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,188 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,394 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 29,764 for Daila itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Latvian word with a precise and lovely meaning behind it.
  • Five letters, nothing silent, and easy for a small child to write.
  • Short and clean, which pairs well with a long or complicated surname.
What to consider
  • The two pronunciations belong to two different source names and both circulate.
  • Daila, Dayla, Dalia and Daila all appear in American records and get confused.
  • Outside Latvian communities the Latvian meaning is entirely unknown.
