Where it comes from

Our story of Dayla

Our story of Dayla belongs to a rhyme family. Kayla arrived and became enormous; Layla arrived from Arabic and did the same; and between them they made a shape — two syllables, a bright first vowel, a soft -la landing — that American parents could build on freely. Dayla comes out of that. Somewhere off to one side is a Hebrew word for a hanging vine, which is a lovely thing and is probably not this name's parent. What is certainly here is a sound that a great many people found beautiful at once, and a family that wanted a version of it nobody else in the class had.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Hebrew dalia means a slender hanging branch or a vine tendril, and Dalia is a common modern Israeli name from it; that reading is documented. Turkish has its own Dayla usage. But Dayla itself is not recorded as descending from either — in American use it sits among Kayla, Layla and Dayna, where the shape is doing the work. The Hebrew word is real and the connection to this spelling is not established.

Two syllables, stress on the first. DY-lah, with the first vowel as an English long i, is occasionally heard from readers taking the ay as in aisle, and is not the usual saying.

Dayla sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2022, with 87 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dayla went to 58 girls in 2025, but Daila and Daylah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 120, which makes it the 840th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,055 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,394 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 27,712 for Dayla itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two easy syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
  • Five letters, nothing silent, and easy for a small child to write.
  • Sits in a very familiar sound family, so it never needs introducing.
What to consider
  • It has no documented meaning, so anything offered for it has been supplied.
  • Dayla, Daila, Daylah and Dalia are all in use and belong to different traditions.
  • It sits very close to Kayla and Layla and will be misheard as both.
