Where it comes from

Our story of Vanellope

Our story of Vanellope is a short one and it is honest: somebody wrote it down. Names come into the world this way more often than the reference books admit — Wendy, Vanessa and Pamela were all coined by writers, and all three now look as though they had always existed. The difference here is only that we can date it. In a hundred years, if the film is forgotten and the name is not, a naming dictionary will list it as being of uncertain origin, which will be true and will miss the point entirely. It was made, on purpose, and it works.

Meaningnot established

Not established

There is no etymology, because there was never a word. The name was written for a character in a 2012 animated film about arcade games, in which the characters carry deliberately confectionery-flavored names. Its parts echo Vanessa, Penelope and the vanilla of the setting, but none of those is a source in any traceable sense. A name that begins in a screenwriter's notebook has a birth date rather than a derivation.

Pronouncing Vanellope

vuh-NEL-uh-pee

Four syllables with the stress on the second, on the pattern of Penelope. The final e is fully sounded. It is long, but nothing in it is difficult, and English speakers get it right once they have heard it.

Vanellope sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2019, with 95 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Nell and Ellie are two very well established short forms hiding inside it.
  • Nothing in the sound is difficult; the name is long rather than hard.
  • Genuinely distinctive — a child is unlikely ever to share it in a classroom.
What to consider
  • The film association is total and will arrive before the child does.
  • It has no meaning, and a page offering one for it would be inventing a second time.
  • Four syllables will be shortened by everyone outside the family, so the short form matters.
