The story of Alyah
In Hebrew aliyah is one of the most loaded ordinary words there is: making aliyah means moving to Israel, and the waves of that movement are numbered and named. It is not usually a personal name in Israel for that reason, though the spelling appears in American records. The Arabic Aliya is a straightforward woman's name across the Muslim world, and Aaliyah is its most common American spelling. Alyah reaches the record along both roads and, most often, as a respelling of Aaliyah.

ascent — in Hebrew; exalted — in Arabic
Hebrew aliyah, from alah, 'to go up', names the going up: to Jerusalem on pilgrimage, to the Torah scroll when called to read, and above all to Israel as an immigrant — the word for that is aliyah and nothing else. Arabic aliya is the feminine of ali, 'high, exalted', a name of God among the ninety-nine. The roots are related across the two languages and the names are separate. Alyah spells either.
Pronouncing Alyah
ah-LEE-ah
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Hebrew says a-lee-YA with the stress at the end; Arabic AH-lee-ya with it at the front. American English usually lands in the middle.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Christl test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alyah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Christl climbed just as high around 1964, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Christl's path sketches the road Alyah is walking now.
Alyah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two documented meanings, both of them substantial, from two related languages.
- Aly and Lia are both ready short forms and both are established names.
- Every sound in it is easy in English, so it survives the crossing intact.
- In Hebrew the word means immigration to Israel, which carries a great deal for Jewish families.
- Aaliyah is far more common in American records and this spelling will be corrected to it.
- Alyah, Aliyah, Aaliyah and Aliya all circulate and belong to different traditions.
