Where it comes from

The story of Anastacia

The name was given to children born at Easter in the Greek-speaking Christian world and spread from there. Saint Anastasia is commemorated in the Roman canon of the Mass, which kept the name visible in the Latin west; Russia took it up enormously through the Orthodox church, where it is among the most common women's names. In Greece the name is still a straightforwardly seasonal one, and children named Anastasia and Anastasios celebrate their name day at Easter rather than on a fixed date.

Meaning

resurrection; standing up again

Greek anastasis is ana, 'up', with a form of histemi, 'to stand' — so a standing-up, a rising. It is the ordinary Greek word for resurrection and is used that way throughout the New Testament. Anastasios and Anastasia are the masculine and feminine names built on it. The reading is documented and undisputed; the c in Anastacia is a Spanish and English spelling variant of the s.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Anastacia went to 58 girls in 2025, but Anastasia, Annastasia and Anastazia and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,969, which makes it the 164th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,731 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 816 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 27,712 for Anastacia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • An exact and unusually hopeful meaning, tied to a specific season.
  • Stacy, Nastya and Ana are three ready short forms across three languages.
  • Recognized at sight across the Greek, Slavic and Latin worlds alike.
What to consider
  • Anastasia is the standard spelling and this c-form will be corrected in writing.
  • Four syllables is long for daily use and the name will almost always be shortened.
  • The pronunciations differ noticeably between English, Greek and Russian.
