Where it comes from

The story of Anastazia

Saint Anastasia of Sirmium, martyred around 304, has a feast on 25 December and is named in the Roman canon of the Mass, which gave her an unusual prominence. The name became standard across the Greek and Slavic Christian world and is among the most common in Russia today. Its Western fame owes a great deal to the youngest daughter of Nicholas II, killed in 1918, and to the persistent claim that she had survived — a story that produced films in 1956, 1997 and since. The z spelling belongs to Polish and Czech orthography and also appears in American respellings.

Meaning

resurrection

Greek anastasis means a rising up or a raising — from ana, 'up', and histemi, 'to stand' — and it is the ordinary New Testament word for the resurrection. Anastasios and Anastasia are formed from it. The name was given particularly to children born at Easter, which is called Anastasi in Greek. The derivation is settled and unusually transparent; few names state a doctrine this plainly.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Anastazia went to 19 girls in 2025, but Anastasia, Anastacia and Annastasia and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,969, which makes it the 164th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,952 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 816 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Anastazia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, striking and expressible in one word.
  • Ana, Stacy, Tasia and Nastya give it four short forms across four traditions.
  • It is recognized across Greece, Russia, Poland, Italy and the English-speaking world.
What to consider
  • The z spelling will be corrected to s by most American writers.
  • Four syllables is long for everyday use, so a short form is effectively required.
  • Stress placement varies considerably between languages.
