Alixandra
Feminine · “defender of men”
There is a verse line named after Alexander. The alexandrine — twelve syllables, with a break in the middle — got its name from a medieval French romance about Alexander the Great, and it became the standard line of French poetry for six hundred years, which is a considerable afterlife for a meter named after a book about somebody else.

The story of Alixandra
The romance was written in the twelfth century and its long lines were unusual enough to be named after their subject. French poetry then used the alexandrine for everything serious — Racine, Corneille, Hugo — with rules about where the break falls and what may cross it that generations of schoolchildren have had to learn. English never took to it: our equivalent is the ten-syllable line, and the twelve-syllable version turns up in English mostly as a joke about being too long.
Meaning
defender of men
The Greek compound joins a verb about defending to the word for a man, and it is one of the oldest names in Europe still in ordinary use. This spelling replaces the e with an i, which is a French medieval convention — Alix was the standard Old French form — so the letters are older than they look, even if the American family using them was not thinking about that.
