Where it comes from

The story of Alyce

Adalheidis was a tenth-century Burgundian empress and saint, and her name spread across Europe, worn down differently in each language. Alice was in heavy English use from the Middle Ages and again from the nineteenth century, helped by two enormously popular children's books. Alyce is the ornamental respelling of that revival, appearing in American registers and peaking around 1920.

Meaning

noble kind, of noble sort

From the Germanic Adalheidis — athal, 'noble', and heid, 'kind' or 'sort'. French wore it down to Aalis and then Alis, which English took as Alice. The German Adelheid and the English Alice are the same name at different stages of erosion.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alyce went to 38 girls in 2025, but Alice, Alize and Alyse and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 3,766, which makes it the 71st most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,761 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 427 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 42,297 for Alyce itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent and both elements are thoroughly documented.
  • Alice stands behind it with a thousand years of European use.
  • The spelling gives it a distinct written identity at no cost in sound.
What to consider
  • Alice is overwhelmingly the standard spelling and this one will read as a variant.
  • It is period-coded to the early twentieth century.
