Where it comes from

The story of Corrine

Korinna was a poet of Boeotia, called a rival of Pindar in one ancient tradition, of whom fragments survive. The word kore itself is one of the central terms of Greek religion and art. French took the name as Corinne and an 1807 novel by Madame de Staël made it fashionable across Europe. American use peaked in the 1920s, and Corrine with the doubled r belongs to that period.

Meaning

maiden

From Greek kore, a girl or maiden, with a diminutive ending; Korinna was borne by a Greek lyric poet of Boeotia, and French produced Corinne. The word kore also names the standing maiden statues of archaic Greek sculpture.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Corrine went to 38 girls in 2025, but Corinne and Korinne are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 304, which makes it the 667th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,165 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,287 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 42,297 for Corrine itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning with a genuinely deep record in art and religion.
  • Cori and Rina are both complete short forms in their own right.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • Corinne is the standard spelling and will be offered as a correction.
  • The stress is unsettled between the first and second syllables.
  • It is strongly associated with one mid-century American generation.
