Our story of Nalaya
Ours, offered as ours. There is a fine Sanskrit word sitting one syllable away: alaya, a dwelling or abode, which closes Himalaya — the abode of snow — and which Buddhist philosophy uses for the storehouse consciousness. Nalaya almost certainly comes from the American workshop rather than from Sanskrit. But the neighbor is worth naming, because it is the sort of word that makes a person look at a mountain range differently.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source is established. Sanskrit alaya means a dwelling and closes Himalaya, the abode of snow. Tamil nalam means goodness. Neither is documented as the source of this name, and the Na- opening of modern American naming is the likeliest.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Naydene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nalaya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Naydene climbed just as high around 1943, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Naydene's path sketches the road Nalaya is walking now.
Nalaya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Nalaya is headed
Nalaya should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Nala and Laya are both usable short forms with lives of their own.
- Open vowels make it easy to say in most languages.
- Rare in the records, so it stays distinct on a class list.
- The middle vowel is unsettled between LY and LAY.
- Nalaya, Nalaia and Nailah are all in use and get confused.
- There is no documented meaning, only a construction.
