Where it comes from

The story of Korinne

Corinna's dates are disputed — ancient sources place her as a contemporary of Pindar in the fifth century BC, while some modern scholars argue the surviving papyrus fragments point to a much later composition. What survives is a body of poetry on Boeotian subjects, written in the Boeotian dialect rather than the literary Doric of choral lyric, which is itself unusual and suggests a local audience. The story of the five victories over Pindar comes from Pausanias and later writers, along with the tradition that she advised him to sow with the hand and not with the whole sack. The name entered English use through Ovid, whose Amores address a Corinna. Korinne peaks in 1978.

Meaning

Greek "maiden", as a diminutive

From korē, a girl or maiden, with a diminutive ending — so a little maiden. Korē was also the cult title of Persephone, used to avoid naming the queen of the underworld directly. Corinne is the French form and Korinne an American respelling with K. The name is unrelated to the city of Corinth.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Korinne went to 13 girls in 2025, but Corinne and Corrine are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 304, which makes it the 667th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,218 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,287 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Korinne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and the literary history is genuine.
  • Kori is an immediate short form and a name of its own.
  • The K spelling connects it to the Greek and German forms.
What to consider
  • Corinne is the standard spelling and will be substituted.
  • It is easily confused with Corina and Karen in speech.
  • The final e is silent and often dropped.
