The story of Dollie
Dorothy was a staple English name from the sixteenth century, and English formed Doll from it by the same substitution habit that gave Molly from Mary and Sally from Sarah. Doll then went into the general language: the toy is called a doll because dolls were given the commonest girls' pet name of the period. Dollie and Dolly were registered as legal names in nineteenth-century America, with Dollie peaking in the 1880s.
Meaning
gift of God
Through Dorothea, from the Greek doron, 'gift', and theos, 'god'. It is the same pair of words as Theodora with the halves reversed, which is an unusually tidy piece of Greek naming.
