The story of Jaye
The silent e is English's most overworked letter. It marks a long vowel in mate against mat; it keeps a word from ending in v or u; it softens c and g in race and change; and it appears in a good many words for no reason at all, added by scribes or printers. Naming found one more job for it. From the early twentieth century, short unisex names took a final e when given to girls — Jaye, Faye, Kaye, Raye — and the convention was strong enough that the presence of the letter was read as a sex signal on a form. It has weakened since, but it has not gone. The female Jaye peaks in 1956.

A clip of J-names, or the bird
Jay serves as a clip of Jacob, James, Jason and Jane, as the letter J spelled out, and as the name of the bird, which comes from Old French geai. Jaye adds a final e, which is silent. Which source lies behind an American bearer is a family matter, and the added e contributes no meaning of any kind.

The Stephania test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaye's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stephania climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stephania's path sketches the road Jaye is walking now.
Jaye sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
