Stephania
Feminine · “Greek "crown”
The -ia that makes Stephania a woman's name is the same -ia that makes Italia a country. Latin used it to turn a name into an abstract or a territory as readily as into a feminine, which is why Julia, Cornelia, Hispania and Arabia are all built the same way.

The story of Stephania
The Latin -ia suffix does an unusual amount of work. On a family name it makes the daughters: every woman of the gens Julia was Julia, which is why Roman women's names are so repetitive and why sisters were distinguished by number or by elder and younger. On an adjective or an ethnic term it makes a territory: Italia, Gallia, Germania, Arabia, and later Australia, Bolivia and Rhodesia. The two uses come from the same source, and English inherited both without noticing they are the same suffix. Stephania reached America chiefly with Italian, Polish and Greek immigration, and the figures peak in 1916.
Meaning
Greek "crown, wreath"
From Greek stephanos, the wreath given to a victor. Stephania is the Latin feminine formed with the suffix -ia, which in Latin makes feminine personal names from masculine ones — Antonius to Antonia, Julius to Julia — and also makes place names and abstract nouns from adjectives. The Italian form is Stefania and the Polish Stefania; Stephanie is the French development of the same name.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
