Carmelita
Feminine · “Spanish diminutive of Carmen”
Carmen looks like the Latin word for song, and almost everyone reads it that way — but the Spanish name is not from that word at all. It is from Carmelo, Mount Carmel in Israel, and Carmelita, the diminutive, keeps the connection visible where Carmen has hidden it.

The story of Carmelita
The coincidence is old enough that it has affected how the name is used. Bizet's Carmen of 1875 and the Spanish literary tradition around it lean on the poetic reading, and dictionaries of names in English still list song as a meaning, which is how a false etymology becomes self-sustaining: the wrong reading is quoted often enough to look documented. The actual line runs from the Carmelite order founded on Mount Carmel in the twelfth century, through the Marian devotion that spread across Spain, to Carmen as one of the most common Spanish women's names. Carmelita is the diminutive, and it appears in American records with Mexican-American and Filipino families, peaking in 1930.
Meaning
Spanish diminutive of Carmen — from Mount Carmel
Carmen in Spanish is from the Marian title Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, from Hebrew karmel, a garden or orchard. Latin carmen, a song, poem or incantation — the source of English charm — is a separate word that happens to be spelled identically. The name is not from it. Carmelita adds the Spanish diminutive -ita, marking smallness or affection.

The Euna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Carmelita's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Euna climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Euna's path sketches the road Carmelita is walking now.
