Rickie
Feminine · “Diminutive of Richard or Frederica”
Rickie is given to both — 1,854 girls and 16,383 boys since 1880. See Rickie as a boy nameSee other names given to both
American naming used a single letter to mark sex. The same sound, written -ie, went to girls and, written -y, went to boys: Rickie and Ricky, Bobbie and Bobby, Jackie and Jacky, Frankie and Franky. Nothing is pronounced differently. The distinction is visual and it is entirely a convention.

The story of Rickie
The -ie for girls and -y for boys convention is a twentieth-century American habit and it is visible in the data as a split rather than a rule — plenty of men are Ronnie and plenty of women are Toni. What makes it worth noticing is that it is one of very few sex signals English has: the language has no grammatical gender, no obligatory feminine suffix, and no marking on adjectives, so a name carries whatever signal spelling can supply. When a clipped boys' name was given to girls in the 1930s and 1940s, the -ie spelling was the tool available. Rickie peaks in 1947, at the center of that window, and its male counterpart Ricky peaks later, in the 1950s.
Meaning
Diminutive of Richard or Frederica — Germanic "powerful ruler"
Richard is Germanic ric, ruler or power, plus hard, brave or strong. Frederica is frid, peace, plus the same ric. Both clip to Rick, and both take the -ie or -y diminutive. Rickie as a female name usually points at one of these or at Erica; it carries no separate meaning of its own, and which fuller name lies behind it varies entirely by family.

The Gizella test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rickie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gizella climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gizella's path sketches the road Rickie is walking now.
Rickie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is short, phonetic and impossible to mispronounce.
- The fuller names behind it are settled and very old.
- The -ie spelling reads as feminine without needing explanation.
- It reads as a nickname rather than a full legal name.
- The sex signal depends entirely on spelling and is lost in speech.
- The mid-century peak dates a bearer clearly.
