The story of Rickie
Richard came to England with the Normans and stayed near the top of the charts for eight centuries, worn down in speech to Rick, Dick and Hick. The affectionate stretches Ricky and Rickie followed. The -ie spelling was the American preference in the early twentieth century, applied to Willie, Eddie, Jimmie and Bobbie alike, and Rickie peaked in the mid-1950s as part of the wider Rick and Ricky wave.
Meaning
brave ruler
Through Richard, from the Germanic ric, 'ruler' or 'power', and hard, 'brave' or 'hardy'. The ric element is cognate with the Latin rex and the Sanskrit raja — one of the oldest and most widely traveled word-roots in any European name.
