The story of Rollie
American records between about 1880 and 1920 are full of men registered under the -ie form of their names, and the practice was not casual: families wrote what the child would be called, and the formal version was simply not used. Willie, Ollie, Bennie, Freddie and Rollie all peak in that window and all decline sharply after the First World War, as American naming turned toward formality. Rollie's own best year is 1893. What replaced the habit was not a new fashion in sounds but a new idea about documents, and the -ie names were the casualty.

famous wolf, by way of Roland or Rollo
Rollie is a short form rather than a name with its own root, and it shortens more than one thing. Roland gives Germanic hrod, fame, plus land; Rollo and Rollin give Norse hrod plus ulfr, wolf. Both start with the same fame element and diverge after it. Registered on its own the name carries whichever of these the family had in mind, and often neither.

The trade-off
- Warm and informal without needing a formal name behind it.
- Genuinely period-authentic rather than an old-sounding modern coinage.
- Six letters, two syllables, and no ambiguity in the spelling.
- The -ie ending on a man's name reads as either antique or juvenile to modern American ears.
- Rolly and Raleigh both share the sound and will be written instead.
- There is no longer form to fall back on for a formal setting.
