Sal
Masculine · “savior”
Sal is Salvatore, and Salvatore is the Saviour. Italian Catholic families named sons directly for the title rather than for a saint who held it, which is why Italy has so many men called Salvatore and so few countries elsewhere do.

The story of Sal
Southern Italy and Sicily made Salvatore one of the most-given men's names in the country, and the great migration of the 1880s to 1920s carried it to the United States in enormous numbers. American English does not comfortably hold a four-syllable name, and the immigrant generation's sons were Sal within one generation and often on the certificate by the second; the same compression turned Giuseppe into Joe and Vincenzo into Vinny. Sal's own best year in United States records is 1958, which is the generation of American-born grandchildren rather than of the arrivals, and it is one of the clearest markers of Italian-American naming in the whole record.
Meaning
savior
Italian Salvatore and Spanish Salvador both come from Late Latin salvator, a savior or rescuer, from salvare, to save. The word was coined by Christian Latin writers to translate the Greek soter, and it is used as a title of Christ. As a personal name it is devotional, naming the office rather than a person who held it.

The Masao test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sal's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Masao climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Masao's path sketches the road Sal is walking now.
Sal sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable and three letters, about as portable as an American name gets.
- A settled meaning through a name that is still fully alive in Italy.
- Unmistakably marks an Italian-American heritage when that is the point.
- It is a short form, so Italian relatives may expect the full Salvatore on the certificate.
- It reads as a mid-century American name, which is exactly its period.
- Sal is also a woman's short form of Sally and Sarah in some regions.
