The story of Rollin
Hrolfr was so large, the sagas say, that no horse could carry him, which is why the Franks called him Rollo the Ganger, the walker. Whether or not that is true, the Norse settlement he led became Normandy, his descendants took England, and a Scandinavian name became one of the founding names of French and then English aristocracy. The diminutive Rolin gave the surname Rollin and Rollins, and American families turned the surname back into a given name in the nineteenth century, which was standard practice then. Rollin's best year in United States records is 1903, and it belongs squarely to that period of surname-derived American men's names.
