Where it comes from

The story of Stefania

Stephen was the first Christian martyr, stoned in Jerusalem, and his cult spread the name across the whole of Europe; Hungary's founding king took it, which made it national there. Feminine forms follow in every language: Stephanie in French, Estefania in Spanish, Stefania in Italian and Polish, Szczepania in older Polish. Stefania was widely given in Italy and Poland through the twentieth century and came to American records with families from both.

Meaning

crown; garland

Greek stephanos, a wreath or crown, particularly the one placed on a victor's head. The New Testament plays on the name of the first martyr and the crown of the faithful, which is why the word carried into Christian naming so strongly.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Stefania went to 25 girls in 2025, but Stephania is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 39, which makes it the 921st most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,178 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 41,212 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 64,291 for Stefania itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It offers several short forms across languages, from Stefi to Steph to Ania.
  • The meaning is a single object with a documented place in the earliest Christian writing.
  • It works in Italian, Polish, Greek and English households alike.
What to consider
  • Stephanie is the standard English form and will be substituted by people writing quickly.
  • Stefania, Stephania and Stefanie are all in use, so the spelling will be asked for.
  • Four syllables is long for American forms and gets clipped without being asked.
